Table Height Standards
When purchasing furniture, you want to be sure your pieces will fit as expected in your space. To get a better idea of how each piece will fit, it is important to consider their standard heights. We will consider the standard heights of different tables and how you can measure to ensure you don't experience buyer's remorse.
Dining Tables
Dining tables have a standard height from around 28 to 30 inches from the ground to the top of the table surface. Different types of dining tables can have different heights. You can expect formal dining tables to be closer to 30 inches tall, while an informal dining table will generally be 29 inches tall. The older the table, the lower it will be due to changing designs, but you can expect them to stay between 28 and 29 inches tall. Lower dining tables, around 26 inches, can be used for lounge-style or low seating.
Kitchen Tables
While most kitchen tables will have the same height as dining tables, around 28 to 30 inches, kitchen islands, and counter tables will sit higher, around 34 to 39 inches tall. Depending on the space, 36 inches tends to be the standard height.
Console Tables
The standard height for console tables can vary depending on where it will be used. Entry console tables and buffet consoles tend to be around 33 inches tall, while most other consoles will match the height of your kitchen or dining rooms tables, around 28 to 30 inches tall. There is no standard height for consoles that are placed behind your couch since you will want the console to be shorter than the couch.
Coffee Tables
The standard height for coffee tables is between 18 and 20 inches high. This creates a balance between the heights of your couch or chairs and the coffee table. These heights will allow your coffee table to sit about 1 to 2 inches below the height of your couch cushions.
Nightstands
While there is no standard height for nightstands, you want them to be roughly the same height as your mattress. Because the standard height of beds tends to be around 25 inches, you will see nightstands between 24 and 28 inches tall. Your nightstand does not need to be the same height as your mattress but should be within about 2 inches for balance purposes.
Side Tables
Most side tables will be between 22 and 30 inches tall, with the standard size around 25 inches. Because side tables can be used in a variety of spaces, including next to your couch, in hallways, in entryways, and other spaces, the size you will want changes depending on the room. If you will be using the table next to your couch, keeping the table within 2 inches of your armrest height will give you the best results.
Bar Tables
Bar tables are generally much taller than standard kitchen and dining tables. These tables have a standard height of 42 inches but can be found anywhere from 40 to 47 inches tall. Generally speaking, the taller the table, the more modern the aesthetic.
Office Desks
The height of an office desk can be a very personal decision, but the standard height is between 28 and 30 inches. How comfortable this is for you will depend on your height, so finding a shorter or taller desk will help give you an ergonomic workspace. This will help your posture and make working at your space more comfortable.
