It is believed that this thrilling technique traveled from India and spread across Europe, Portugal, Holland and then England where it flourished for many years.

Resembling a twisted rope, or barley, it is a characteristic found in early Baroque furniture and made a comeback in Empire and Federal pieces, revived yet again in the 19th century, used in Victorian furniture, and can also be referenced to as a spiral-twist.
